Compared to other test prep books I have purchased, this book is unique in that it offers TWO full-length practice tests -- one is contained in the book, the other is a PDF to be downloaded from the publisher's web site. This number of tests help students better prepare for tests, in this case the Florida Standard Assessments (FSA). Once they complete the same test several times, students begin to learn the answers and are no longer challenged. The additional test continues to properly challenge students' abilities.Florida, of course, isn't the only state which administers assessment tests. All states have them. They are likely very similar and test the same abilities and skills. My children have taken the Kansas and Texas state assessments recently. So if books aren't available for your state's specific assessment, this book should also be an excellent resource to better prepare for your state's assessment tests.This book in particular explains the Florida Standards Assessment test, and identifies the types of questions which appear on the FSA, including open responses, multi-select, graphic response item display, equation editor, matching item and table item. This book also explains how to best use the book for students so that they are not only familiar with the types of questions which will be asked but also the "soft" skills, such as familiarity, time management, strategies and such which build confidence. The authors also provide test prep tips, perhaps the most important of which is practice, practice, practice! An educator once said long ago, "Don't practice until you get it right. Practice until you can't get it wrong." Michael Jordan, the basketball star, also credits practice with his personal success and the success of his team. So these authors get it right!This book provides plenty of opportunity to practice. More than half the book, in fact, is devoted to practice. There are 34 pages of Operations & Algebraic Thinking, 7 pages of Number & Operations in Base 10, 9 pages regarding Fractions, 45 pages about Measurement & Data, and 6 pages about Geometry. The practice exercises in these pages feature an answer key and thorough, detailed explanations about each and every answer. Some adults may find some of the questions challenging as well.The practice tests contain similar questions as the exercises, and challenge students to compute area, read graphs, identify mathematical patterns, write expressions related to area, comprehend linear measurement, identify visual representation of fractions, perform rounding, complete 2-step word problems (I had some difficulty with these as a child, I recall), understand relationships between multiplication and division, find unknown factors, estimate and measure liquid volume and mass, and recognize shape categories. All measurements, incidentally, are done with the metric system of mm, grams, etc.I think you would be hard pressed to find a better book to prepare for the FSA math portion.
This test prep workbook is not only teacher approved but also matches state standards to allow children to practice for the FSA. The full-length practice tests will familiarize your child with the types of questions on the official test. There are also worksheets organized by concept so you can practice specific sections as needed.The layout is clean and organized and there is plenty of space to write in the answers if you so choose. The answer key and explanations are thorough and help you to understand not only what the right answer is but also explains the reason why the answer is correct.
Very helpful. Gives enough practice questions for kids to get better in the area that they need help. The only reason for giving 4 stars is because some of the answers in the answer sheet was wrong. I happen to be good at math and know the answers even without the answer sheet, however there may be parents that don't know or don't remember, and when the answer sheet gives some answers wrong, that can confuse the child, and that is not good!! Otherwise I find the questions helpful. Will recommend.
Questions cover the standards thoroughly. I would advise to use it to help a child get less worried about the test and to get a lot of practice and review. It helped with studying for test.
