Stelljes has it going on. Great plots with plenty of twists, plenty of action, and very well developed, believable characters. His whole series is absolutely worth your money, so Roger? Please write more!I'm giving four stars because,As a retired cop, the malaprop language regarding firearms drives me nuts. I can tell Stelljes has had good advice in writing these, so why doesn't somebody tell him that almost no modern firearms, and certainly not anything made by Sig Sauer or Glock, uses a clip - Its a bloody magazine, and not calling that screams that the author doesn't know what they're talking about. Same goes for "bullets" - a bullet is the projectile, it's part of a round, which includes brass, primer, and powder. You don't load bullets in a clip - See above...Finally, as a lifelong hockey player and blue collar guy from a small town up north, I wish he'd left the getting rich and jumping into the big time out of the series, but that's just me.
This is a combination of Police Procedural and Mystery/Thriller with a touch of Political Intrigue and Romance.'Mac' is one of the members of the fourth generation of the McRyan clan to grace the St. Paul, Minnesota Police Department. 'Mac' came to being a policeman in a round about way, his brains and his athleticism got him through undergraduate and graduate school with high honors and a law degree. All of his knowledge, the things that he learned from family, school, and police training will be needed as a politically sensitive case is dropped in his proverbial lap. Will he be able to live up to his father's legacy or are there forces at work trying to keep him from doing just that?I loved the way that the author showed both sides of the crime - one side was from the criminal's perspective - the other was how the police attempted to make sense of the clues and sometimes the lack of them. I also loved how all the pieces of the puzzle finally came into place for the big picture but not until towards the end.In some ways the main character's background made me think of the youngest son of the Police Commissioner on the TV series Blue Blood.Warning: This book is for Mature Audiences due to mild to moderate graphic violence (some of a sexual nature), adult language, and some intimate sexual situations.
I initially bought "Fatally Bound", and then when I learned that it was the fifth instalment in the series, I put it down and went back to the chronological beginning, which brought me to "The St. Paul Conspiracy." I must say (and I know many thriller readers will know what I mean) that it is difficult to imagine a major crime problem in the Twin Cities that does not get solved by Lucas Davenport. The introduction of this new hero in that region is going to be fun. The story told in this novel moved quickly, and the writing was great in that you could feel the frustration in the cops' minds before they got their big break. I will read the others in the series in quick succession, I enjoyed it so much.
Really Horrible Novel. I wanted to like this when I saw a comparison to Tami Hoag and John Sandford. Setting in Minnesota is the only thing in common. Very slow plot with repetitive and unrealistic dialogue. Cops trying to make jokes that seem out of place and far fetched and plain corny. Cops don't talk like that. Author is trying too hard it seems. Over and over again with the bar scene. Enough already. We know the main character's uncle owns a bar. We know all the cops like free beer and they prefer to work the case while drinking beer. Good for them. And the cops are plain stupid. Maybe because they are drinking beer on the job. I don't know. Never have a read a novel where I thought the cops were completely clueless. Throughout the entire story the "bad guys" are following the detectives and planting electronic devices in their homes and the cops haven't a clue. Author seems more concerned that the cops are getting laid rather than being good detectives. No respect for the detective work. All the characters are vain and silly and one dimensional. After seeing all the positive reviews I have to believe the author has a lot of family and friends and interested parties posting reviews. Because this is garbage.
This is a pretty good series: the author’s writing style makes you feel as if you are right there in the middle of the action, and you will have a hard time putting it down. If you enjoy a good thriller, or are looking for a new thriller series to start and enjoy, I would recommend you pick this one up and start reading the series in order.
This was an interesting read in a fairytale impossible kind of way. It kept my interest with lots of action and plot-twists, but I knew that the storyline was totally impossible in any real world. The thing that was most annoying for me was the constant and varied grammar goofs. If you don't notice when a book uses "to" instead of "too", or "too" instead of "to", or even "wringing" when they mean "ringing" or "peak" instead of "peek", then this book is fine. If you do notice, it will really get under your skin. The editor really dropped the ball on this one.
I made it halfway through this muck and mire simply to find out if it could get any worse. It could. Once again, who's writing these great reviews on simple tripe? Although a good editor couldn't have saved this book, he or she could have kept it from being so embarrassingly awful. If you write poorly, for goodness sakes, don't overwrite. Sorry. Nothing redeeming here.
