From School Library Journal
K-Gr 3—Young readers are introduced to the exceptional lives of Agatha Christie and Marie Curie. Though slight, each book succinctly portrays its figure as a once inquisitive child eager to pursue her interests, concluding with her ultimate success. Events are selected for their relatability for child readers (a young Christie reading in bed late at night, a young Curie winning a gold medal at school). The informative text is accompanied by visuals that portray scenes relevant to the story. Christie is smartly illustrated in black-and-white with pops of red, a perfect reflection of her future as a mystery writer. Curie is steeped in cool tones, with an occasional pinkish heart surrounding Curie and her husband, Pierre. An extra bonus is the additional biographical material and photographs for each volume. VERDICT Another batch of successful installments in the series. Consider wherever the "Little People, Big Dreams" titles are popular or as an introduction to these two influential women.—Paula Huddy, The Blake School-Highcroft Campus, Wayzata, MN

I don't want to knock this series, because I think it's filling an important role helping engage my 6-year-old with influential women. The problem is that this book (and the couple others we picked up) just isn't very engaging. While the artwork is interesting, the actual biography is frustratingly vague, in places glossing over decades and major accomplishments in a sentence or two.I think it's a fine line to walk between too little information and too much in a children's book, this landed solidly on the too little side - for me and for my 6yo, who hasn't revisited it since our initial reading. Contrasted with something for the same age group like Meltzer's Amelia Earhart and this pales by comparison.
This picture book biography of Agatha Christie is a perfect introduction to the author for the youngest of readers. The story is incredibly engaging as we follow young Agatha from her childhood love of books, through her volunteer work during the war and to her creation of Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. This short biography is a testament to the imagination, and I thought the author handled Ms. Christie's work with murderers and victims with just the right touch to make it appropriate for young readers. My favorite scene is of the elderly Ms. Christie standing in a cemetery along with the line "Agatha wrote more than a hundred books and invented enough victims to fill a cemetery!"While the sparse text does an admirable job of giving the reader a useful introduction to Ms. Christie's life, I found the illustrations to be rather flat and felt that the artist missed some opportunities here. All of the illustrations are in black and white with just one pop of red. I just didn't find them to be at all charming, but I imagine that is just personal preference. The story itself is followed by a short timeline of the author's life, including four actual photographs. This is an excellent choice for young readers taking their first steps with biographies. While I think it's lack of visual impact lessens it's usefulness as a group read aloud, it is still a worthy purchase for any classroom collection.
This series is designed to remind us of Little Golden Books, but the story is a good biography for young children. I'm impressed by how well the text captures the most important points about the life of Agatha Christie, with a view toward inspiring young readers. Agatha Christie is not an obvious choice for a book on an elementary school reading level -- most young kids will not be familiar with her -- but this book tells the story of a brave young woman who combined her imagination and her experiences and became a successful writer. The illustrations are simple and charming, yet sophisticated in style and filled with intriguing details. There is a quick bio of Christie, with photos, at the end of the book. There's also a listing of other titles in the series, so I know that there are also biographies of Coco Chanel, Amelia Earhart, and Marie Curie -- it's wonderful to think of kids having the opportunity to learn about such a fine assortment of accomplished women.
Agatha Christie may well be one of the most famous writers to exist. Her mysteries are legendary, as are the two characters she created to solve them. So it was with great interest that I picked up this book, to see what it had to say.The line drawings are wonderful, and were one of my favorite parts of the book. The story itself felt a bit simplistic, and could have used a bit more detail - but it wasn't terrible, either. Just...short. The last 2 pages were the best - photos of Agatha Christie through the years, along with a more fully fleshed-out biography of her that didn't feel like it was trying too hard to be readable for younger children. It would be great for a timeline of the author's life.Overall, it's a cute book, with fun drawings, and a neat take on someone who chose to write mystery books for a living.Kindergarten would probably be the best age for this,
I really like these series. They are easy to read and help kids get excited about history. They are perfect for young readers!Agatha Christie isn't super interesting, and my kids found a fact they knew was wrong...something about her book being one of the most widely read or translated. I will be trying others in the series. I can't remember the exact fact, but not matter how we spun it, we couldn't get the fact to ring true. At any rate, all enjoyed it, and it would be a five star if it weren't for that.
We found this to be a xrisply illustrated and kid-friendly adaptation/synopsis of Agatha Christie's life story. Our 4 & 7 year old daughters enjoyed learning about Agatha and her penchant for literature, mystery, and murder. In fact, when we told them this was nonfiction, the older one insisted on having us read the small biographical excerpt in the back of the book. We can't wait to get our hands on another one of the books in this series!
