Review

"When [Sartre] demands that we take responsibility for our lives, for the shape of our world, for the situation of the least favored—for others as well as ourselves—he is expressing decisively important conditions for learning to live as responsible citizens in this globalized world. This is no outmoded radicalism, but the message of one of the most challenging and contemporary philosophies."—Ronald Aronson, International Herald Tribune"Like no one else, [Sartre] sought to understand exactly what it means to be responsible."—Ronald Aronson, International Herald Tribune"In this small book, we discover Sartre as more than the café existentialist or the playboy. Here we see the committed philosopher working in public, with many of its evident hazards. Despite its flaws, in Existentialism is a Humanism, we have a model for a committed philosophy—one that is sorely needed today."—Nicholas Hengen, Rain TaxiSelected as a 2008 AAUP University Press Book for Public and Secondary School Libraries"To understand Jean-Paul Sartre is to understand something important about the present time."—Iris Murdoch

â€œWhat do we mean here by ‘existence precedes essence’? We mean that man first exists: he materializes in the world, encounters himself, and only afterward defines himself. He will not be anything until later, and then he will be what he makes of himself. Thus, there is no human nature since there is no God to conceive of it. Man is not that which he conceives himself to be, but that which he wills himself to be, and since he conceives of himself only after he exists, man is nothing other than what he makes of himself. This is the first principle of existentialism.”~ Jean-Paul Sartre from Existentialism Is a HumanismJean-Paul Sartre was a French philosopher, novelist, playwright, and critic. He was a leading intellectual of the 20th century and the leading proponent of existentialism. While reading Thoughts of a Philosophical Fighter Pilot, I saw that James Stockdale included this book in his course syllabus on moral philosophy. So, of course, I immediately picked it up along with a bunch of the other titles. (We’ll be systematically working through that syllabus.)Interestingly, both Stockdale and Sartre were prisoners of war. Sartre spent a year in a Nazi prison camp while Stockdale spent eight years in a North Vietnamese prison. In addition to sharing that experience, the two also share a FIERCE commitment to personal responsibility—which is, at the core, what both Stoicism and existentialism are all about.(On that note, Viktor Frankl comes to mind—another man who suffered the indignities of war and wrote about the last freedom we each have: the freedom to choose our response to any given situation he describes in Man’s Search for Meaning.)This short book is a transcript of a speech Sartre gave in 1945 to address many of the critics of existentialism. It’s a *remarkably* lucid, concise exposition on the primary tenets of existentialism—even more remarkable given the fact that Sartre gave this lecture without notes.Let's explore some of my favorite Big Ideas:1. Existential Anguish - + Its antidote.2. Passion vs, Choice - Always your call.3. Quietism vs. Commitment - Do what you're here to do.4. The Stern Optimism - Of a ethical militant.5. Moral Choices - As a work of art. Here’s to having the courage to face the reality of our challenges and opportunities as we optimize, actualize and serve profoundly.More goodness— including PhilosophersNotes on 300+ books in our *OPTIMIZE* membership program. This short book provides an introduction to the philosophy of existentialism, as understood by Jean-Paul Sartre. Sartre provides a broad definition of: "existentialism is a doctrine that makes human life possible and also affirms that every truth and every action imply an environment and a human subjectivity." It is an atheistic philosophy, that does support free will and states "the first effect of existentialism is to make every man conscious of what he is, and to make him solely responsible for his own existence."It is a somewhat interesting primer and the important thing to acknowledge is not so much this particular philosophy, but the importance of philosophy in general. The whole of idea that life is absurd does not appeal to me, nor does most of what else is written by Sartre, but it is important to consider different viewpoints when trying to determine the truth and this book contributes to that search and is therefore important and worth reading, not to mention it can be read in a single afternoon.

Man can will nothing unless he has first understood that he must count on no one but himself; that he is alone, abandoned on earth in the midst of his infinite responsibilities, without help, with no other aim than the one he sets himself, with no other destiny than the one he forges for himself on this earth.

In this one talk Sartre provides a clear overview of the varying aspects of existentialism, clarifying each (as he is refuting arguments against the philosophy throughout) which leaves the reader with a solid understandings of the tenets of the philosophy. It is extremely readable and will certainly leave you thinking. Great if you want to find a starting place for existentialism but aren't sure which area to dive into in regards to fiction or non-fiction (A good follow-up to this piece is Camus' The Stranger)

I bought this, for I had a casual interest in Sartre and his version of existentialism. Moreover, as I had just read Camus's THE STRANGER, and this book had Sartre's analysis of it, I decided to buy a used copy.I must say that this book did not change my world. I am not now an avowed existentialist because of this book. I do, however, think that this book is well worth a read. What is said within it is thought provoking, and even if one does not wish to entertain the idea of existentialism, for whatever reason, Sartre composes his theory-- reduces it, really, from the massive BEING AND NOTHINGNESS-- into an erudite, laconic little work that can't do much harm, and yet can provide some insight into an influential theory which permeated after World War Two.If one is interested in existentialism, even mildly, give this book a shot. It is an easy read. And it may just teach you a thing or two. Or not. Your choice.

So Sartre famously denounced this talk later in his career. Honestly though, if you're a layman like me and just want to follow the evolution of human thought, this is fine for this leg of the journey.(More like lazyman, amirite?)
