This is the best book I've found so far on SE native plants. Lots of species are covered, includes a nice write-up on each, and good photos, though too many of the pictures are extreme closeups so I can't see the form of the plant. My biggest complaint is that the common plant criteria aren't presented as clearly as I'd like. I'd prefer to find basic info--e.g., sun/shade, height-wildlife uses, watering needs, etc--at a glance, ideally with symbols. Tho' it does provide ratings from 1 to five stars for each plant variety, which is my favorite feature of the book. My other complaint is that I sometimes have to hunt to find the photo that matches the text. They should be aligned better. Still, it's the best book on SE natives I have. The only one I regularly reference. Highly recommended.

A very comprehensive easy to use book. I love the star ranked system based on use in a personal garden. Each of the plants are ranked on year round attractiveness, easy of acquisition, how easy they are to grow, whether they transplant well, etc. and rated in a star system. It also delves in to the diversity of the native plant system of the South East as well as our various micro-climates and conditions, that some yards may be better suited to than others.

As a transplant to NC, I've been wanting to identify all of the plants are in my mostly wooded acre property that has been untouched for at least 20 years. I'd like to keep quite a bit of it native, but need to clean it up a lot in order for the yard to still be useful to our family.I couldn't find more than ONE plant in this book that is currently in my yard. I recognized most of the plants in this book from growing up in ND/MN and then living a decade in St. Louis, so these plants aren't what I would call strictly SE natives.I expected to be able to figure out what was already existing and thriving on my wild property, plan ways to highlight them, keep them manageable, add other natives to go with them, etc. I just didn't find this book helpful for that. With the authors coming from NC, I expected a heavier emphasis on this area, but I think what's in here are more for coastal and mountain areas maybe. I haven't seen these plants in untouched areas here either so maybe that's another reason I just wasn't a fan of this book. It's a beautiful book, coffee table display sized. But it's just not what I was looking for.I've found The Wildflowers of the Carolinas Field Guide amore helpful for identification of actual plants that are probably in your yard as opposed to ones that it seems like you're supposed to go buy. (Like I said, I planned on buying more native plants, but with the book being reviewed, I'd have to get rid of everything here and buy all new and I was wanting to play off of what is already here.)

Great book but the spine separated after opening the book only a few times. We are trying to find a way to get it replaced. This has never happened to any of our books over the past 50 years .... ODD. I hope Amazon will replace it. The book is simply great! Well I tried everything on Amazon who really does not make it easy to contact or chat with a real person. We'd like to exchange the book for one that is not defective, but NOBODY exists anymore on Amazon to talk to. We are frustrated! Don't buy the book until the binding issue is resolved. We are looking into binding glues to try to repair our brand new book. The author should know of this problem and work on a solution!

A great, practical guide to native plants for the southeast. It is a "coffee table" sized book, but has very useful information for anyone who wants to grow native plants. Each plant listing has an extensive description with "grading" of 1 - 4 stars, with 4 stars being outstanding plants. Cautions are given for invasive plants. There are notes about propagation, habitat, zone, and other pertinent notes. Very informational! I love it and will use it often.

This is a must have book for the gardener in the SE US who is interested in native plants. The author provides a capsule summary of plant characteristics and cultural requirements-- and a lot of beautiful photos of mature specimens.

It has beautiful photographs that really show the plants. It is well organized by groups of plants, ferns, grasses, aquatic plants, bog plants, wildflowers, vines, shrubs, conifers and trees. Each plant is described and it's growing conditions given, and it is given a rating as to it's value in the garden. In the back are lists of plants that would suit particular growing conditions and situations. The book is much larger and heavier than I had expected. It is more of a coffee table book, to be admired and studied, rather than a field guide.

I’m a master gardener. This is a good reference, especially for people who don’t like online researching. The indexing and photos are a plus.
