I just finished this book and it was an extremely well written story on these two turning point battle in the South. It was very informative and kept me engaged on the strategy and tactics employed by the American militia and Continentals (especially at Cowpens), as well as the set-piece strategy and Tactics by Ferguson and Tarleton. Old habits die hard and over time they can, in the long run, have a devastating impact. Like I said, it is a book which addresses the two battle with some very information. I was well pleased with the book. I plan to draw on this book for some key notes for my US History at Spartanburg Community College. Both battles are just a stone's throw from the central campus.....well, maybe Paul Bunyan might have to throw the stones.Ben L.

What Robert W. Brown Jr. accomplishes in this well written treatise on these two pivotal battles is to bring out in the sunshine the reality of what was accomplished and how it was accomplished, shattering decades of mystic views on the American Revolution.Well written and researched. A MUST HAVE book for the serious investigator of the beginnings of our country. I highly recommend this book!

This is a very well written book that needs to be on the bookshelf of anyone interested in history.

Easy to read, large print, very good selection for my home library.

Good discussion of this element of the Revolutionary war and the importance of the southern campaign.

GREAT

The book was in good condition and I enjoyed how the author combined these two events into one big story. The only problem was our victory wan NOT complete with these two victories. Right after the victory at Cowpens, came the defeat at Guliford Courthouse. That defeat actually proved to be a pyric victory for Corwallis because he lost too many men and left Greene with a large army. Cornwallis had to abandon his campaign and the move he made was to Virginia. He finally arrived at a little place called Yorktown and then, our victory was complete. Maybe the author has plans for a Gulliford Courthouse and Yorktown book?

For reasons not entirely clear to me, the British Southern campaign of the American Revolution (1780-1781) is largely absent from popular perceptions about the war. We are taught about the Battle of Bunker Hill (actually Breed's), Washington's Christmas crossing of the Delaware, and Valley Forge. But until recently the battles of King's Mountain and Cowpens have been mostly relegated to the sidelines of Revolutionary history. This is a serious oversight, because the failures experience by Lord Cornwallis and his forces in the Carolinas led inexorably to his surrender on the Yorktown peninsula in October, 1781.The British had hoped to split the colonies by sending a military expedition to the South where, it was assumed, the larger population of Loyalist would support their cause and augment their modest forces. But while the eastern portions of North and South Carolina did include a fair number of Loyalists, the western sections were home to yeoman farmers who had a festering dislike of both the British and the Loyalist slave owning gentry. The British compounded the error of their overly simplistic view of the locals by employing high handed tactics that strained relations even with the Loyalists. The campaign began well, however, when the British routed American forces at the Battle of Camden and sent hapless General Horatio Gates into a headlong flight of 170 miles in 3 days. But pride goes before the fall. Various militia groups began forming in Virginia and moving through the mountains into North Carolina, gathering strength as they went. British Major Patrick Ferguson had separated from Cornwallis and, perhaps overanxious for a taste of military glory, placed his forces on the crest of Kings Mountain. The militia groups coordinated an attack from all sides and, using frontier fighting tactics, overran Ferguson's forces. Ferguson was killed in action and some British soldiers attempting to surrender, in reprisal for prior instances of "no quarter" practices by certain British commanders, suffered the consequences. The Battle of Kings Mountain had all the earmarks of a guerrilla campaign, but what followed was a masterpiece of military strategy. The newly assigned Southern commander of the Continental Army, Nathaniel Greene, ignored conventional military wisdom by splitting his smaller force and sending a command under Daniel Morgan to the west. This enticed Cornwallis to again split his force, sending Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton in pursuit. Morgan chose to make a stand in a field called the Cowpens. He turned a military liability into a strategic advantage when he asked the poorly disciplined and flight prone militia units to serve as his front line. They were instructed to fire three volleys and then retreat to the rear, in harmony with their normal tendency. The British were mauled by the fire of the militia lines but, sensing victory due to their retreat, moved forward into another hale of fire from the more stalwart Continental units. The Continentals then staged a tactical retreat but turned and renewed fire while militia reformed and flanked one side of the field as Morgan's cavalry unit rode in on the other. British forces collapsed under the double envelopment and Tarleton fled. Within 10 months a severely weakened Corwallis surrendered to Gen. Washington. The best someone can hope for in attempting to learn more about any military campaign is to find an initial book that is succinct without being simplistic and shows an understanding of the roles strategy, terrain, and chance play in how events unfold. "Kings Mountain and Cowpens: our victory is complete" is such a book. In 148 pages of text author Robert W. Brown Jr gives a fine summary of the events leading up to the battles, the battles themselves, and the aftermath. Not the last word in the history of the Southern campaign, but highly recommended as an excellent introduction.
